Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

Series: The Parables of Jesus

June 25, 2023 | Paul Joslin

Jesus' parable of the unforgiving servant is about a king who forgives a servant's enormous debt. However, the servant, after being forgiven, refuses to show mercy to a fellow servant who owes him a small amount. The king discovers this and punishes the unforgiving servant, teaching the lesson that we should forgive others as we have been forgiven.

Notes:

  • Forgiveness ≠ Reconciliation.
  • Forgiveness means letting go of the past sins committed against you, not harboring grudges or plotting revenge, and moving on.
  • Reconciliation requires a proper response of repentance from the offending party to fully restore relationship. For forgiveness to be a synonym of reconciliation there must be a proper response from the offending party towards the victim.
    • Without genuine repentance, which by definition in scripture leads to changed behavior, the relationship with the offender cannot be restored no should victims act as if it should be.
