Cultural Mentoring Group

In 2022 the Denver Metro Area is expected to receive roughly 2,000 people as refugees from Afghanistan. Many have asked how we can get involved in supporting these families who were evacuated from their homes and familiar lives to a completely new country, culture and life in the US.

The Cultural Mentoring Group provides support for the Afghan refugee families who were recently relocated to the Denver area. In connection with Lutheran Family Services, Waterstone has a team of volunteers who are assisting a family of 5 with things like finding housing, enrolling their children in school, finding an ESL program and looking for a job. In addition, the team provides support and friendship to help the family get acquainted and adjusted to life in the US including finding local grocery stores, learning the bus system and many other things that we know as familiar.

There is an immediate need for more volunteers to support additional families. All volunteers will need to complete the background check and application process through Lutheran Family Services.
